Why Is India So Bad For Women?

Lineage was central to determining status and responsibilities, consent held communities together, and concepts of reciprocity extended to gender roles and divisions of authority. Women seldom wore head covering of any kind but they dressed their hair with great care. They brushed it daily with a porcupine tail brush and anointed it with perfume of pennyroyal, sweet grass, fir needles, skunk oil or musk of beaver.

On 28 September 2018, the Supreme Court of India lifted the ban on the entry of women. It said that discrimination against women on any grounds, even religious, is unconstitutional. As of 2018, 12 out of 29 states and the union territory of Delhi have had at least one female Chief Minister.

The four leaders unveiled a slate of new initiatives on a range of pressing global issues — from climate change and COVID-19 to technology, infrastructure and education — as well as formalized plans to meet annually. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization , a global health agency, declared COVID-19 a worldwide pandemic. Jessica Lenahan tells her story of domestic violence and how the Castle Rock Police Department in Colorado failed to protect her. Through international advocacy, the Center and its partners not only educate, but also add world pressure on the United States regarding its obligations to end the epidemic of violence against Native women. Farmers face declining plot sizes, degraded soils, scarce water and rising debt. In the past 25 years, over 300,000 desperate, debt-ridden farmers in the country have committed suicide.

So when the opportunity presented itself to travel India with Contiki for The Travel Project, it could not have been a better fit. To meet women across the country who Contiki work with and support, and to shed a light on just some of the challenges the women of India face. I’ve been traveling solo all around the world for a decade, teaching and encouraging other women to do the same. Throughout this period of time, India has always been the #1 country on my bucket list, it’s vibrant sights, sounds, food, and exotic stories that of a traveller’s dream.

    Independent India

Eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Sauk and Mesquakie women played integral roles in the political and economic lives of their villages and proved to be both adaptable and willing to fight for their rights. Assuredly, these women continued to adjust to their changing conditions of reservation life, as they had done for the previous centuries both before and after the arrival of Euro-Americans. The story of Sauk and Mesquakie women illustrates that the remarks of Euro-American observers, like Allie B. Busby, should not be taken at face value. More often than not these commentators did not understand American Indian gender roles, and ignored the multiple, essential, and occasionally powerful roles that native women played within their own communities.

The result is that the Indian Constitution today has given to women the equal status with men. All professions are open to both of them with merit as the only criterion of selection. Those working on women’s issues say the shrinking space for them will affect not just the economic but also the social position of women in a country where they have struggled to break free of patriarchal norms. Even before the pandemic, women made up only about 20% of India’s labor force – far below the global average and lower than is the case in such South Asian countries as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. As stated in earlier sections, Indian women are disadvantaged in comparison to men in many areas such as literacy skills contributing to drop out rates, gender bias, and inadequate facilities. Deaf women face unique challenges in education, as they experience the intersection of oppression as both a woman and a Deaf person.

For example, in his Autobiography, Black Hawk remembered some of the violent confrontations he experienced with the growing number of Americans. One time, Black Hawk reported that he was hunting raccoons when he met three white settlers. Although Black Hawk vehemently denied the charges, the men beat him with sticks and demanded that he leave the area. Another time, Black Hawk told of a member of his village who had cut down a tree to gather honey.

Women’s job loss and safe transportation during the pandemic continue to be pressing concerns in India. Organizations like the Azad Foundation supports Sakha Cabs – taxi services by women, which continues to employ women in five major Indian cities – Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata, Indore and Chennai. At a time when COVID patients and their families struggled to find local taxi service, Sakha Cab drivers transported them safely, equipped with masks, gloves, hand sanitizers and face shields. With less than one doctor for every thousand people, and a medical system stretched to its seams, women have shouldered an enormous burden of care since the pandemic started in India. Women make up47 per cent of all health workers and more than80 per centof nurses and midwives, working at the front lines of COVID-19, risking exposure to the virus.

Recent job stagnation and high unemployment rates for women, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, also keep women out of the labor force. Not only is driving a rickshaw through the streets desi sex videos of Jaipur stressful, it requires about 6 sets of eyes to see all around you as India is chaotic to say the least. While we where talking, I experienced this kind of behaviour first hand.

Women with strong property and inheritance rights earn nearly four times more money, the land rights nonprofit organization Landesa stated in a 2018 report. The imbalance in access to property has partly to do with India’s inheritance laws. Hindu, Jain, Sikh and Buddhist women in India were given equal inheritance rights to ancestral property in 2005 – legally, if not always in practice.
